A devastating road crash at Atwedie, near Konongo in the Ashanti Region, has left at least five people feared dead and several others battling for their lives. The accident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, October 25, 2025, involved a Sprinter bus and a stationary tipper truck parked along the Kumasi-Accra Highway.

Eyewitnesses recount that the bus, with registration number GR 6626-22, was descending a curve when the driver unexpectedly came upon the stationary truck. Despite attempts to veer off, the Sprinter collided violently with the truck’s rear, leaving the front of the vehicle mangled beyond recognition.

“The impact was frightening,” an eyewitness told reporters. “Two passengers in the front seat were trapped inside. It took fire officers almost two hours to cut through the wreckage and pull them out. I fear some of them didn’t make it.”

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Ghana Police Service were quickly dispatched to the scene. Their coordinated efforts helped rescue survivors and clear the wreckage from the busy stretch of highway, which serves as one of the country’s most heavily used transport routes.

The injured passengers, numbering about eleven, were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency medical attention. Authorities have yet to release the official number of fatalities as investigations continue.

Preliminary reports suggest that poor visibility and the improper parking of the tipper truck may have contributed to the crash. Residents and frequent users of the highway have long complained about heavy trucks being abandoned on the shoulders of the road without reflective signs, a practice that has repeatedly led to accidents along the Kumasi-Accra corridor.

Local drivers are calling for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations and better illumination along critical curves on the highway.

“Too many lives are being lost on this same stretch,” a commercial driver lamented. “We need regular patrols and sanctions for those who leave their vehicles unattended at night.”

As investigations continue, the tragedy at Atwedie serves as another painful reminder of the human cost of road negligence in Ghana, a cost that continues to claim lives, shatter families, and leave entire communities in mourning.
