
Former First Lady of Ghana, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, has reportedly passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
According to family and media reports, the exact cause of her death remains unclear as of the time of this publication. She was 76 years old.
Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings was a prominent Ghanaian politician, advocate for women’s empowerment, and the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings. She received her basic education at the Ghana International School and continued to Achimota School before pursuing higher education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Throughout her public life, Nana Konadu played a pivotal role in Ghana’s democracy and social development. She was the First Vice Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and later became a presidential aspirant for the party. She also founded and led the 31st December Women’s Movement in 1982, an organization dedicated to women’s emancipation, economic empowerment, and equal access to social resources.
Her leadership and activism transformed the landscape of women’s participation in Ghanaian politics and inspired generations of women to seek leadership roles.
Tributes have since been pouring in from across the political spectrum and civil society, celebrating her life, her contributions to national development, and her unrelenting fight for gender equality.
