The Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FoSCel) has joined the global and national campaign to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, using the occasion to both celebrate progress in cancer advocacy and draw attention to the silent struggles of families living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Ghana.
In a statement released on October 16, the Foundation commended ongoing national efforts by government institutions, corporate bodies, and the media in championing early detection, public education, and support for breast cancer patients.
“We commend the tremendous national effort by government agencies, corporate Ghana, and the media in promoting early screening, education, and support for breast cancer patients,” the Foundation said. “These collective efforts are saving lives and inspiring hope across the nation.”
While applauding these successes, FoSCel Foundation also highlighted the need for balanced attention across the health spectrum, noting that thousands of Ghanaians continue to battle Sickle Cell Disease with limited awareness and social support.
According to the Foundation, an estimated 15,000 babies are born each year in Ghana with Sickle Cell Disease, yet public education and empathy for affected families remain low compared to other health campaigns.
“We therefore call for sustained collaboration and awareness across all health conditions, from cancer to sickle cell, because every life matters,” the Foundation stressed.
FoSCel reiterated its commitment to community education, genotype testing, and advocacy efforts aimed at reducing stigma and improving care for individuals and families affected by SCD. The Foundation believes that a more inclusive approach to health awareness will promote understanding, compassion, and collective action for a healthier nation.
Through its ongoing initiatives, FoSCel Foundation continues to champion the message that health awareness should not be seasonal, selective, or segregated, but continuous and compassionate.
