The Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FoSCel) has launched a three-day Sickle Cell Awareness Tour in the Effutu Municipality to educate the public on sickle cell disease, its causes, and the importance of genotype testing.
The campaign, running from October 26th to 28th, seeks to reach communities, schools, churches, mosques, and the media across Winneba under the theme “Let’s Talk About Sickle Cell.” The daily sessions, held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., are designed to engage residents in open conversations about the realities of sickle cell disease, while addressing misconceptions and stigma surrounding it.
According to FoSCel Foundation, the tour forms part of its ongoing commitment to promote education, early testing, and emotional support for individuals and families affected by the condition. The initiative highlights three key discussion areas:
- Understanding what Sickle Cell Disease really is
- The importance of knowing one’s genotype before marriage
- The stigma attached to Sickle Cell and how to end it
Speaking about the event, organizers emphasized the need for continuous community dialogue to reduce the prevalence of new sickle cell cases through awareness and informed decision-making.
“This campaign is not just about talking; it’s about saving lives through knowledge. When people understand their genotype status and break the silence around sickle cell, they empower themselves and others,” a spokesperson for the Foundation noted.
The FoSCel Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to advocacy, education, and support for persons living with sickle cell, has been at the forefront of health sensitization activities in Ghana, particularly within the Central Region.
The UEW Co-operative Credit Union has sponsored this year’s awareness tour, reaffirming its commitment to supporting health and social welfare initiatives in the Winneba community.
