The Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FoSCel) has introduced an innovative approach to health education through the use of comic strips as part of its pilot awareness campaign in the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region.
The initiative, which forms part of FoSCel’s ongoing Sickle Cell Awareness Tour, aims to simplify complex information about Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) by using visually engaging and relatable storytelling. According to the Foundation, the comic series will serve as an accessible tool to educate both young and adult audiences about the realities of living with sickle cell, the importance of genotype testing, and the need to end stigma associated with the condition.
Speaking during the launch of the pilot phase in Winneba, the Founder of FoSCel Foundation, Mr. Amos Andoh explained that the comic strip is designed to “speak to hearts and minds through art,” combining creativity with health advocacy to achieve greater community impact.
“We realized that not everyone connects with medical jargon or formal lectures. But when people see stories that look like their own lives, drawn in comics, they pay attention, they remember, and they act,” the Director noted.
The comic features everyday Ghanaian characters who navigate life with or around Sickle Cell Disease, highlighting themes of resilience, empathy, and awareness. It also educates readers on how knowing one’s genotype can prevent avoidable cases and how compassion can replace stigma in social spaces such as schools, churches, and families.
This pilot stage, being implemented in Winneba, targets schools, churches, and community centres before expanding to other parts of the Central Region and beyond.
FoSCel Foundation believes that this creative educational model will not only inspire behavioural change but also foster inclusivity and understanding for persons living with the condition.
The project is part of the Foundation’s broader goal to use education, advocacy, and innovation to create a future where Sickle Cell Disease is better understood and managed in Ghana.
The campaign is supported by the UEW Co-operative Credit Union, which continues to champion community health and education initiatives.
