The Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended the implementation of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Guidelines, including the collection of levies, with immediate effect.
A statement from the service directed all heads of senior high and technical schools to stop collecting PTA levies and treat the suspension as mandatory. Regional and district education directors have been tasked to ensure compliance and prevent any breaches.
The guidelines, which were recently communicated, outlined membership rules, term limits for executives, audit requirements, and restrictions on teachers’ involvement in PTA accounts. The suspension comes after reports that some schools were demanding levies from parents during the registration of new students, despite GES authorizing no such collections.
The service emphasized that no student should be denied access to school services for non-payment and reminded all institutions that any PTA collections require prior approval from the appropriate education authorities.
