The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that it will permanently terminate the appointment of any teacher found guilty of sexual misconduct.
Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, made this position clear during an interview on The Pulse on JoyNews. His comments follow two separate incidents, one involving a teacher at Okadjakrom Senior High Technical School in the Oti Region and another at KNUST Senior High School in the Ashanti Region.
“When you are found culpable in such a situation, GES cannot continue to engage you. A teacher is expected to be a parent and a mentor to young learners. If you fail to uphold the moral and professional standards of the profession, you will lose your job,” Mr. Fenyi explained.
He stressed that cases involving minors are even more serious: “When investigations reveal that the victim is underage, the matter becomes highly complicated. With minors, the law does not permit any form of consent, whether the student agrees or not, the act is illegal.”
The teacher at the centre of the Oti Region case, Mr. Mfo Richard Tibetor, has already been interdicted as investigations proceed. Efforts are also being made to contact the student involved, who has since completed school.
In the case of KNUST SHS, the Headteacher has been suspended by GES as inquiries continue.
