After years of public calls for a fitting tribute, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is finally preparing to celebrate one of the nation’s most decorated footballers, Asamoah Gyan, with an official testimonial match, a move that many say should have happened long ago.
Black Stars Team Manager, Ameenu Shardow, has welcomed the decision, describing it as a long-overdue gesture to a player who carried Ghana’s hopes on the global stage for nearly two decades.
“Recognising Gyan in this way is not just about honouring one man’s achievements,” Shardow said. “It tells every player who wears the national jersey that Ghana remembers, respects, and rewards those who give their all.”
Gyan, who retired in 2023 after a stellar career that saw him score 51 goals in 109 appearances for the Black Stars, remains Ghana’s all-time top scorer and Africa’s leading marksman in World Cup history. His name is etched into the country’s sporting memory, from his dramatic goals at the 2006 World Cup in Germany to his leadership at the 2010 tournament in South Africa, where Ghana came within inches of a historic semi-final spot.
Shardow believes that formal recognition from the GFA sends a strong message about valuing national heroes while they are still alive. “Too often, we wait until it’s too late to celebrate our legends. This should inspire current and future Black Stars to serve with pride, knowing their sacrifices won’t be forgotten,” he added.
Since retiring, Gyan has remained close to the team, providing informal mentorship to younger players and supporting the technical and management staff alongside fellow legend Stephen Appiah.
The testimonial match, which will bring together local and international stars, is expected to draw fans from across the continent.
