The National Identification Authority (NIA) has revealed plans to upgrade the Ghana Card into a dual-purpose tool that will also function as an electronic wallet for payments.

According to the Authority, the innovation is part of ongoing efforts to deepen financial inclusion, modernize Ghana’s payment systems, and expand the usefulness of the Ghana Card beyond identification.

The initiative will allow cardholders to store money directly on their Ghana Card, enabling them to make and receive payments, transfer funds, and conduct other financial transactions without necessarily relying on bank accounts or mobile money platforms.

Officials say the system is being designed in partnership with relevant financial institutions and regulatory bodies to ensure safety, efficiency, and accessibility. When rolled out, the e-wallet feature will support transactions in local currency and potentially link to existing digital finance platforms.

NIA has assured the public that strict cybersecurity measures are being integrated into the rollout, while training and sensitisation programmes will be introduced to help Ghanaians understand and use the new feature effectively.

Observers believe the move could revolutionize Ghana’s cashless agenda and strengthen government’s digitalisation drive, though they caution that issues of rural internet connectivity and user education must be addressed for the project to succeed.
