The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an unconstitutional usurpation of power that threatens the nation’s democratic process. The coup, carried out by elements of the military, disrupted the peaceful conduct of presidential and legislative elections held on November 23, 2025, and obstructed the scheduled announcement of results set for November 27.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 26,2025, Ghana expressed deep concern over the attempt to overturn the will of the people, warning that the action has dangerously interrupted the country’s democratic trajectory. The government called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and urged all actors to respect the electoral process, emphasizing that any grievances must be resolved through transparent and legally recognized mechanisms.

The statement further stressed the need to safeguard the security and fundamental rights of citizens and foreign nationals in Guinea-Bissau, highlighting the protection of ECOWAS Election Observation Mission officials deployed in the country. Their safety and secure passage, Ghana said, must be guaranteed without delay.

Ghana also appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. The government reaffirmed its full support for ECOWAS and the African Union in coordinating a response to the situation, in line with regional and continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
