Criminologist and KNUST lecturer, Dr. Jones Opoku-Ware, has praised the Ghana Police Service for arresting two suspects linked to the Wa serial killings.
The police confirmed the arrests this week, with one suspect reportedly confessing to 15 murders.
Dr. Opoku-Ware described the breakthrough as a major success in crime detection, noting that identifying serial killers is one of the most difficult tasks for security agencies worldwide.
He said serial killers often live unnoticed within communities and operate across different locations, making it hard to connect their crimes.
The criminologist commended the police for connecting the dots within a relatively short time, adding that such investigations usually take years.
He also highlighted the need for psychological assessment of the suspect, explaining that many serial killers suffer from mental health conditions such as schizophrenia.
According to him, the Wa suspect appears to fit the profile of a killer driven by both thrill and financial motives, targeting vulnerable individuals like watchmen and mentally ill persons.
Dr. Opoku-Ware described the arrest as a major victory for law enforcement and called for continued efforts to improve criminal profiling and mental health evaluation in Ghana.
