Ghana’s newly appointed Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Kojo Choi, has shared an emotional account of his remarkable journey from a struggling student to representing Ghana on the global stage.

Following his swearing-in ceremony on October 1, Ambassador Choi took to social media to express deep gratitude to Ghana for the life-changing opportunities that shaped his destiny.

“Ghana raised me. Ghana educated me. Ghana shaped me,” he wrote, describing his appointment as a symbolic homecoming and a profound honour.

Choi’s educational path began at SOS College, where the late Mrs. Margaret Nkrumah, founder of the SOS Foundation, offered him a full scholarship despite not initially making the admission list. That opportunity enabled him to complete the rigorous Cambridge IGCSE and International Baccalaureate Diploma programmes, laying the foundation for his future.

He later attended the University of Ghana, where he endured severe financial hardship as an international student. He recalled how Mr. Teddy Konu, then-Registrar of the university, regularly intervened to help him pay partial fees so he could continue his studies.

“He would call the finance office and allow me to pay only a small portion until I could gather more,” Choi recounted. “Thanks to his help and persistence, I was able to graduate from Legon.”

That experience, he said, cemented his decision to remain in Ghana permanently.

“I made a decision in my heart that I will stay in Ghana. I will become one with this nation and live my life here,” he reflected.

During his swearing-in, Ambassador Choi was visibly emotional as he paid tribute to the individuals who shaped his life, including Mrs. Nkrumah and Mr. Konu, who represented his parents at the event.

Choi described his appointment by the President as a recognition of his enduring bond with Ghana.

“It is as if the President understood that Ghana had adopted me, educated me, and raised me as her own,” he said.

As he assumes his new role in South Korea, Ambassador Choi expressed his commitment to deepening Ghana-Korea relations in trade, education, culture, and diplomacy.

He concluded with a promise to serve with humility and gratitude:

“I go to Korea not just as a diplomat, but as a son of Ghana, nurtured by her grace and determined to serve in her honour.”
