Ghana has been named Vice Chair of the Kimberley Process (KP) for 2026 and Chair for 2027, marking the first time a West African country will take a leadership role in the global diamond certification framework.

The announcement came on 21 November 2025 during the closing session of the Kimberley Process Plenary at the ALMAS Conference Centre in Dubai. Ghana’s delegation, led by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), secured the appointments after two days of intensive discussions with governments, industry representatives, and civil society actors.

Established by the United Nations, the Kimberley Process aims to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate supply chain and currently includes 86 member nations.

Delegates at the Dubai meeting highlighted Ghana’s strengthened transparency, institutional reforms, and technical expertise in the minerals sector as key factors behind its selection. Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of GoldBod, delivered a statement during the ministerial session that reportedly boosted confidence in Ghana’s capacity to lead. The announcement was met with sustained applause from attendees, signalling widespread support.

In an interview, Mr. Gyamfi described the appointment as a “renewed responsibility” for Ghana to steer the Kimberley Process with integrity and innovation. “With ongoing reforms in gold and diamond governance, Ghana is well-positioned to guide the KP into its next era of global impact,” he said.

While in Dubai, Mr. Gyamfi also visited Sam Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the Middle East and the third largest worldwide. Discussions centred on potential partnerships to strengthen Ghana’s mineral value chain, with a focus on refining, value addition, and strategic collaboration.
