The Government of Ghana has officially designated Friday, March 6, 2026 as a statutory public holiday in celebration of the nation’s Independence Day.

In a statement released on March 2, 2026, the Ministry of the Interior, led by Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, confirmed that the date will be observed nationwide as a public holiday.

Independence Day marks the anniversary of Ghana’s liberation from colonial rule on March 6, 1957, when the country became the first in sub-Saharan Africa to gain full political sovereignty.

Typically, the annual commemoration features a series of activities including military and school parades, cultural exhibitions, and official ceremonies attended by government representatives, security personnel, and students, all reflecting on Ghana’s journey and achievements.

In urging citizens to honour the occasion, the Ministry highlighted the importance of remembering Ghana’s history and celebrating its national identity.
