Labour expert Peter Bismark Kwofie has raised concerns about Ghana’s worsening unemployment situation, saying it is forcing many qualified graduates to take up low-level jobs simply to survive.

According to him, the economic hardship and limited job opportunities have pushed several highly educated individuals into positions that do not reflect their skills or academic training.

Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Kwofie explained that while it is not entirely wrong for companies to hire overqualified candidates, such decisions must be made with the consent of the individual.

“It is acceptable for an organisation to employ someone who is overqualified if the person willingly takes the job despite their higher qualifications,” he said.

He, however, cautioned that hiring people who lack the needed skills for a job is unprofessional and affects productivity in the workplace.

Mr. Kwofie further warned that continuously accepting jobs below one’s qualification level could have long-term consequences on career growth and professional confidence.

“When professionals work consistently below their capacity, they risk losing touch with their core skills and miss out on opportunities that match their qualifications,” he noted.

He advised job seekers to balance their immediate financial needs with the long-term impact on their career paths before accepting roles beneath their expertise.

Mr. Kwofie also called on government and private sector stakeholders to intensify job creation efforts and align educational outcomes with the demands of the labour market to help curb the crisis.
