The Ghana National Association of Certificated Counsellors (GNACC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FoSCel) to enhance nationwide efforts on Sickle Cell awareness, counselling support, and genotype education.

The partnership was formalised during GNACC’s National Conference in Kumasi on Thursday, November 21, and represents a strategic step toward reducing preventable Sickle Cell births while providing psychosocial support for those living with the condition.

Speaking at the event, FoSCel Founder Amos Andoh underscored the importance of proactive education. “Every child born with Sickle Cell could have been prevented by knowing their genotype before marriage or childbirth. With GNACC on board, we can reach more young couples, students, families, and communities with accurate education and counselling,” he said.

Under the agreement, GNACC counsellors will actively support FoSCel’s outreach programs, offering professional counselling services to Sickle Cell warriors and their families.

The collaboration will see both organisations running joint awareness campaigns in schools, universities, churches, mosques, and communities across all regions. Activities will focus on genotype education, mental health support, research, and policy advocacy, including efforts to integrate Sickle Cell education into the national curriculum.

FoSCel will provide health education materials, logistical support, and coordination for community-based activities, while GNACC will leverage its network of trained counsellors to enhance the effectiveness of outreach efforts.

GNACC leadership affirmed their commitment to the initiative, emphasising the need to protect future generations and support individuals navigating the emotional and social challenges of Sickle Cell disease.

The partnership is expected to positively impact thousands of young people, couples, families, and Sickle Cell warriors across Ghana, creating a stronger, coordinated approach to tackling the condition nationwide.
