President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will invest GH₵50 million in outboard motors and essential fishing equipment to support fishing communities nationwide.

Speaking at the National Chief Fisherman and Queen Fishmonger’s Conference in Accra, President Mahama described the initiative as part of a wider strategy to modernise Ghana’s fisheries sector and enhance the livelihoods of both coastal and inland fishing communities.

He also revealed that the government is procuring two offshore patrol vessels for the Ghana Navy to strengthen maritime surveillance and combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities.

To promote local fish trade, the President announced plans to build two new fish markets, one in Dambai, Oti Region, and another in Shama, Western Region, as part of efforts to boost market access for fishers.

President Mahama highlighted that these investments complement the recently enacted Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025, which he called a landmark law aligning Ghana with international best practices and reinforcing governance and enforcement in the sector.

The President also reiterated his commitment to modernising the industry by restoring and formalising the roles of Chief Fishermen and Queen Fishmongers through co-management frameworks and community bylaws, ensuring sustainable management of Ghana’s fisheries resources.
