The Ghana Prisons Service has received a major boost to its transport fleet following the donation of three new buses by the Ministry of the Interior.

The presentation, made by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, is aimed at improving the movement of inmates to courts, hospitals, and rehabilitation centres across the country.

The vehicles, a Toyota Coaster, a Hyundai County, and an Ashok Leyland, were jointly provided by the National Security Secretariat and Maripoma Company Limited.

At the brief ceremony, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak said the gesture goes beyond easing transport challenges, describing the new buses as “instruments of efficiency, safety, and dignity.” He added that the move forms part of government’s broader efforts to modernise correctional facilities under President Mahama’s GH₵1 billion security sector retooling programme.

In a related announcement, the Minister revealed that the daily feeding allowance for inmates has been increased from GH₵1.80 to GH₵5.00, a long-awaited adjustment to improve nutrition and general welfare for the more than 14,000 inmates in the country.

“Though I had wished for a higher increment, this is a positive step after years of stagnation,” he noted.

The Interior Minister praised the National Security Secretariat and Maripoma Company Limited for their contribution and called on other institutions and private entities to partner with government in improving prison conditions.

Receiving the buses on behalf of the Service, Director-General Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.) expressed gratitude, describing the donation as “an investment in human dignity.”

She lauded the Minister’s continuous support, saying, “Hon. Muntaka has shown strong commitment to our cause and given us the confidence to strengthen our rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.”

The new buses are expected to ease operational pressures and enhance safety in inmate transportation nationwide.
