The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, has disclosed that a total of 2,748 small-scale mining licences have been reviewed, but no new licences have been issued since the administration of President John Dramani Mahama took office.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, Mr. Kotoko explained that the decision to suspend the issuance of new licences forms part of the government’s broader efforts to sanitise the mining sector and intensify the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
He said the ongoing review seeks to verify the authenticity of existing licences and ensure that future mining approvals meet environmental and regulatory requirements.
“This review process is to make sure every licence granted meets the proper legal and environmental standards before any new approvals are considered,” Mr. Kotoko stated.
Mr. Kotoko emphasised that the government remains committed to ending galamsey and promoting responsible, sustainable mining practices across the country.
