The Ghana Education Service (GES) has distributed more than 6.6 million sanitary pads to schoolgirls across all 16 regions as part of efforts to promote menstrual hygiene and reduce absenteeism among adolescent girls.
The initiative, announced in a statement on Saturday, October 11, coincides with the International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated globally under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of the Crisis.”
According to the GES, the programme seeks to ensure that no girl misses school due to menstruation while supporting the dignity and health of female students across basic and second-cycle institutions.
“This initiative is in fulfilment of the government of Ghana’s promise to provide free sanitary pads to all schoolgirls, from basic to second cycle levels, on a monthly basis throughout their school life,” the statement read.
The GES emphasised that the move reflects the government’s broader commitment to advancing gender equality in education, menstrual health awareness, and the overall well-being of adolescent girls.
The Service expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education for its collaboration in implementing what it described as a “life-changing intervention” aimed at keeping girls in school and empowering them to reach their full academic potential.
“We remain committed to building an inclusive, equitable, and responsive education system that supports every learner,” the GES reaffirmed.
The distribution forms part of ongoing national efforts to break menstrual taboos, tackle period poverty, and create an enabling environment for girls to thrive both in and outside the classroom.
