The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced government plans to construct dedicated camping facilities for Ghana’s national teams, signalling an end to the long-standing practice of accommodating players in hotels ahead of major tournaments.

Speaking on The Arena on Woezor TV, Mr. Adams said the initiative forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s broader sports infrastructure agenda, aimed at reducing costs and improving training efficiency across national squads.

“We are developing the Borteyman enclave to include accommodation and training facilities that meet international standards,” the minister said. “At the same time, the Winneba Sports College will undergo a major renovation to bring it up to a three-star standard capable of hosting our national teams.”

For decades, the Black Stars and Black Queens have relied on hotels for camping, while other national teams have made use of the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. The new facilities, according to the minister, will provide modern, cost-effective alternatives.

Mr. Adams explained that the government plans to establish multiple training and lodging centres to ease the pressure on existing infrastructure and enhance preparation for international competitions.

“We will have Winneba serving one purpose, Borteyman for another, and we’ll strengthen the facilities at Prampram,” he noted. “This way, we won’t have to depend on hotels for our national team camps.”

The minister also revealed ongoing collaboration with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to upgrade the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, turning it into a comprehensive sports development hub.

He said these projects reflect the government’s long-term vision of building self-sufficient, world-class facilities that can host national teams and serve as regional training centres for young athletes.
