The government is making one of its largest investments yet in infrastructure and education, with more than GH¢86 billion allocated to the two sectors in the 2026 Budget Statement presented to Parliament on Thursday by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

Presenting the budget, Dr. Forson announced that GH¢4.3 billion has been allocated to the Ministry of Roads and Highways for nationwide road construction projects. He added that the Ghana Road Maintenance Trust Fund will receive GH¢3.0 billion to support a special initiative to construct 10 kilometres of roads in each of the 166 constituencies in 2026.

“This ensures that roads in areas most in need remain motorable and that critical communities stay connected,” the Minister told Parliament.

As part of government’s broader infrastructure agenda, GH¢30 billion under the Big Push Infrastructure Programme will go into constructing strategic roads and bridges that link national and regional capitals, a move expected to ease transportation challenges and stimulate economic activity across the country.

Turning to the education sector, Dr. Forson revealed that GH¢33.3 billion has been allocated to the Ministry of Education for 2026, in addition to GH¢9.9 billion for the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, noting that GH¢4.2 billion has been earmarked for its implementation next year.

To eliminate the double-track system and improve the quality of secondary education, the Minister announced that GH¢1.1 billion has been assigned to the Ghana Secondary Learning Improvement Programme (GSLIP).

Dr. Forson emphasized that these allocations demonstrate government’s determination to expand access to quality education, modernize national road networks, and promote long-term economic growth.
