The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced an upcoming nationwide rollout of a mobile tax payment platform designed to make tax compliance easier for informal sector workers, who make up the majority of Ghana’s workforce.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, GRA Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong disclosed that the new system, introduced under the Modified Taxation Scheme, will allow individuals earning up to GH₵500,000 annually to pay a standard 3% tax through a user-friendly mobile application.

The platform targets barbers, seamstresses, food vendors, DJs, bloggers, artisans, small-scale traders and other informal workers who often struggle to comply with traditional tax procedures.

“Many people genuinely want to pay their taxes but cannot afford to leave their businesses and queue at our offices,” Mr. Sarpong explained. “With this platform, you simply register with your Ghana Card, make your payment on the app, and get an instant digital receipt.”

He emphasised that the new approach is part of the GRA’s broader effort to modernise revenue collection and reduce barriers that discourage voluntary tax payment.

Mr. Sarpong also appealed to trade associations, local business groups and community leaders to support the initiative, stressing that improved tax compliance will strengthen national development while reducing administrative difficulties for small business owners.

The platform is expected to go live soon, with nationwide sensitisation programmes scheduled to help informal sector workers understand and adopt the system.
