Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has begun a targeted nationwide exercise to recover outstanding water bill arrears amounting to GH¢916 million, deploying 200 National Service Personnel to support the effort.
The Managing Director of GWL, Adam Mutawakilu, disclosed the initiative during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, January 13. He said the move forms part of broader measures to shore up the company’s revenue and curb persistent leakages within the billing and collection system.
According to Mr. Mutawakilu, payment compliance among domestic consumers remains low, with only about 20 to 30 per cent of households currently using digital platforms to settle their water bills. He described the situation as a major constraint on efficient revenue mobilisation.
As part of the new strategy, Customer Care Assistants who are responsible for meter reading have been given additional responsibilities to guide customers on how to pay their bills through mobile money and other digital channels.
He explained that the National Service Personnel will be deployed directly into communities rather than confined to office roles. Their assignment will include identifying customers with unpaid bills, engaging them on outstanding balances, and facilitating the recovery of arrears.
Mr. Mutawakilu noted that as of June, GWL’s total arrears stood at GH¢916 million, stressing that the exercise will also focus on educating customers on the use of the MoMo payment application to improve compliance and make bill settlement more convenient.
The initiative is expected to strengthen GWL’s revenue base while promoting greater adoption of digital payment systems across the country.
