The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured newly recruited nurses who remain unpaid that their outstanding salaries will soon be cleared.
He explained that although the Ministry of Health received financial clearance in August 2024 to recruit about 13,500 nurses, the clearance expired in December, leaving some recruits without salary allocations. Instead of asking them to stay home, the government allowed them to continue working while efforts were made to secure funds for their payment.
According to the Minister, over 7,000 nurses have already been paid, while about 6,500 are still awaiting their salaries. Discussions with the Ministry of Finance are ongoing to resolve the matter.
Akandoh added that similar delays previously affected pharmacists and medical house officers, but their payments have since been settled. He further assured rotation nurses and allied health interns who began their service in 2024 but did not receive allowances that their cases are also receiving attention.
He stressed that the government is adopting practical measures to prevent such challenges in the health sector and reaffirmed that the welfare of health workers remains a priority in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system.
This intervention came up after the nurses took to the road to protest for better conditions of service.
