The Ghana AIDS Commission has disclosed that more than 15,290 people were newly infected with HIV between January and December last year, signalling a worrying rise in infections nationwide.

Director of Technical Services at the Commission, Dr. Fred Nana Poku, revealed that young people aged 15 to 24 remain the most vulnerable, accounting for about 4,700 new infections, representing 31% of all reported cases.

According to him, this marks a sharp increase compared to previous years. Historically, young people contributed between 25% and 28% of new infections, but the latest data shows a significant jump, making youth the fastest-growing group in Ghana’s HIV statistics.

Dr. Poku described the trend as alarming, urging young people to prioritise protection and make responsible choices to safeguard their health. He added that reversing the surge will require stronger public education, increased testing, and consistent prevention campaigns across the country.

He further noted that the Greater Accra Region continues to record the highest number of infections annually, while the northern regions maintain the lowest.

The Commission is calling for renewed national attention and intensified advocacy to halt the rising spread of HIV, especially among the youth.
