A Ghanaian woman has recounted her difficult migration journey from South Africa to Libya, describing how a series of personal setbacks pushed her into undertaking a risky desert trip.
Speaking on Ezra FM, she said her troubles began after she relocated to South Africa, where she lived for two years.
According to her, she initially stayed in Limpopo with a friend who was living with her sister. However, a misunderstanding between the two sisters forced her to leave the house.
“I had to move when my friend and her sister had issues,” she explained.
She then moved in with another friend, but that arrangement also ended abruptly when the friend reported her to the police, accusing her of causing disturbances, an allegation she denies.
“She called the police on me even though I had done nothing wrong,” she said. “The police advised me to move.”
Distressed by the repeated displacement, she contacted an uncle who agreed to host her. But upon arriving at his home, she faced further challenges.
“My uncle’s girlfriend thought I was his wife and started worrying me,” she recounted. “So I decided to leave.”
At the same time, her hairdressing business was struggling, leaving her financially and emotionally drained. She eventually resolved to return to Ghana.
However, upon arriving at the airport in Ghana, she overheard a group of young men discussing plans to travel to Libya. With some money left on her, she made a spontaneous decision to join them.
“I heard them talking about travelling to Libya, so I decided to follow them,” she said.
She bought basic food supplies, including gari and shito, packed them in a school bag, and followed a connection man who facilitated their journey.
