The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH) has praised the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) for prioritising local engineers and technologists in the ongoing rehabilitation of the country’s premier refinery.
A delegation from IET-GH, led by its President, Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng, visited the refinery to assess progress and express the institution’s support for TOR’s revival initiative.
Welcoming the team, TOR Managing Director, Lawyer Edmond Kombat, highlighted the vital role of Ghanaian engineers in the restoration process and reaffirmed the refinery’s commitment to building local capacity through professional training and certification programmes.
According to him, TOR’s strategy aligns with the government’s Reset Agenda, which seeks to strengthen local industry, enhance technical expertise, and create sustainable employment opportunities.
Engr. Boateng commended TOR’s leadership for demonstrating confidence in Ghanaian professionals, describing the refinery’s reliance on local expertise as “a bold step towards national self-sufficiency and industrial resilience.”
He urged engineers and staff to stay disciplined and dedicated, noting that their collective efforts represent a crucial step in Ghana’s broader industrial recovery.
Engr. Wonder Davor, IET-GH President-Elect, also praised TOR’s forward-looking approach, encouraging continuous collaboration with local professionals to attain international operational standards.
Adding her voice, Engr. Dr. Miriam Eduful, an advocate for women in engineering, underscored the importance of workplace safety and adherence to protective protocols to ensure sustainable operations.
During the engagement, Lawyer Kombat disclosed plans to introduce a TOR Training Programme aimed at providing hands-on industrial experience for engineering students from KNUST, UENR, UMaT, and other technical universities. He also revealed a partnership initiative with Middle Eastern refineries to train 5,000 Ghanaian engineers across various specialisations beginning next year.
The IET-GH delegation, led through the facility by Ing. Abraham Quayson, toured key operational areas, including the distillation, reforming, and power generation units. TOR’sengineers were applauded for completing critical maintenance works that were once outsourced to foreign contractors, a move that has saved the refinery substantial foreign exchange.
In conclusion, Engr. Boateng lauded TOR’s commitment to environmental sustainability and expressed optimism that the refinery’s successful restart would stand as a landmark achievement in Ghana’s engineering and industrial history.
