A dawn swoop by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) sent dozens of illegal miners running for safety after officers stormed a notorious galamsey enclave known as “Yellow Face” at Wassa Abrehyia in the Western Region.
The unannounced operation, which forms part of a renewed nationwide clampdown on illegal mining, caught the miners off guard. Many abandoned their tools and fled into the surrounding bush to evade arrest as the task force advanced on the site.
During the raid, NAIMOS personnel demolished makeshift camps and structures believed to be used as shelter for the miners. Equipment suspected to be used for illegal mining activities was also seized or destroyed to prevent the site from being reactivated.
Officers further discovered traces of narcotic drug use and the presence of dynamites, evidence of the increasingly dangerous conditions within illegal mining zones.
NAIMOS officials say the raid is the first in a series of intensified, targeted operations designed to dismantle galamsey networks and curb the rising trend of drug abuse linked to these mining camps.
A video shared by Citi FM captured the chaotic moment miners took to their heels amid gunfire sounds as the task force moved in.
