A fierce fire ripped through portions of the Dansoman Market in Accra on Monday, triggering a massive emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Eyewitnesses say the flames spread rapidly, engulfing stalls and containers before the first crew arrived. According to fire officials, the initial GNFS tender reached the scene barely two minutes after the distress call, but by then the inferno was already fully developed, forcing the team to immediately request backup.
In response, eight additional fire tenders were deployed from the GNFS National Headquarters, Ministries, and Madina stations to reinforce the operation.
For nearly an hour, firefighters battled the blaze under difficult conditions. Although the main fire has been successfully contained, it has not yet been fully extinguished. Several wooden trading structures and metallic containers have already been reduced to ashes.
Regional Fire Officer ACFO Rashid Kwame Nisawuexplained that the team had to contend with crowds of onlookers who obstructed access routes, prompting a call for police support to clear the area. He also mentioned intermittent water supply challenges but assured that crews were working tirelessly to bring the situation under full control.
He further noted that the Service will roll out a fire safety sensitisation campaign in the community after the operation concludes.
The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Rev. Dr. Kwaku Addo, together with GNFS Director of Finance DCFO Mark Brako Appiah, visited the scene to observe the extent of the damage and offer support as emergency efforts continue.
