Former Member of Parliament, lawyer and senior advisor to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, has questioned the growing pattern of modern prophecies that appear to be concentrated almost exclusively in affluent parts of Accra.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Mr. Karbo posed what he described as a “simple but powerful” question: why do most public prophecies seem to locate themselves within wealthy neighbourhoods of the capital, while smaller towns and less visible communities are rarely mentioned.
“I have never heard a pastor prophesy about my hometown,” he remarked. “Is God’s map limited to wealthy areas of Accra, or do divine revelations struggle to locate places without gated houses, expensive cars and social media visibility?”
Mr. Karbo’s comments has sparked reflection on the nature of prophecy and religious authority in contemporary Ghana. He questioned how individuals come to be recognised as prophets and whether there are clear spiritual or doctrinal foundations guiding such claims.
Drawing from his background in Christian Religious Studies, he contrasted today’s prophetic culture with the structured formation of clergy in the Catholic Church. He explained that in Catholic tradition, one passes through a minor seminary and then a major seminary, undergoing rigorous theological training for about seven years before being ordained. This process, he noted, ensures deep understanding of both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.
“I am surprised when I see people preaching the gospel using only the Old Testament,” he said. “The New Testament was an improvement. You cannot ignore it.”
Mr. Karbo revealed that he himself nearly became a Roman Catholic priest, having studied Christian Religious Studies and gone far in discerning the priestly vocation. “I just missed the call. I did not get the calling,” he stated.
He concluded by cautioning against sensational prophecies that, in his view, are driven more by attention and publicity than genuine spiritual insight. According to him, “actual men of God do not make such prophecies, ”urging the public to apply discernment when engaging with prophetic messages.
