KASOTIE MINING TRAGEDY: SEVEN CONFIRMED DEAD, FIVE IN CRITICAL CONDITION

Rescue operations at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District have come to a close after the collapse of an abandoned mining pit claimed seven lives and left five others fighting for survival.

Community sources reveal that out of the twelve individuals involved in the incident, only four are known residents of Kasotie.

The victims, who were engaged in illegal mining, were trapped on Wednesday night, October 1, when the pit suddenly caved in. Reports indicate that miners in the area often operate under the cover of darkness to avoid detection by authorities.

Unfortunately, the night’s operations ended in disaster as the pit gave way, burying the miners.

Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), supported by emergency services and local volunteers, led an intensive search and rescue mission. After several hours, twelve people were pulled out of the debris, seven already deceased and five critically injured.

Atwima Mponua District Chief Executive, Ibrahim Isshak, described the incident as tragic and warned that it should serve as a strong caution to others engaged in illegal mining.

The injured have been rushed to the Nyinahin Government Hospital for urgent medical attention, while shaken residents say the collapse has left the entire community in fear.
