Former Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Prof. Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah, has stated in an interview on Oyerepa that KATH remains the only hospital in the Ashanti Region equipped with a comprehensive emergency unit.
Speaking candidly about emergency healthcare disparities between regions, Otchere Addai-Mensah explained that patients facing critical health emergencies in Accra have a higher chance of survival compared to those in the Ashanti Region due to the availability of multiple emergency facilities in the capital.
“KATH remains the only hospital in the Ashanti Region that has a proper emergency unit,” he stated.
He contrasted the situation in Kumasi with that of Accra, pointing out that the capital city benefits from several institutions with functioning emergency departments.
“When you come to Accra, there is the regional hospital, the 37 Military Hospital and the Police Hospital, all of them have emergency units,” he explained.
According to him, this distribution of emergency infrastructure significantly improves response time and survival outcomes in the Greater Accra Region. In contrast, Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region rely heavily on Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for emergency care, creating intense pressure on the facility.
“The chances of survival when it comes to emergencies in Accra are higher than in the Ashanti Region,” he emphasized.
