A New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary hopeful, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has called on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana, arguing that his continued absence is damaging the image of the party.
Speaking on Oyerepa TV in relation to the reported detention of Ken Ofori-Atta, Mr. Antwi stated that the situation is creating a public perception that the NPP is a “criminal party,” a narrative he believes is harmful not only to party members but to the wider Ghanaian public.
“Now people think the NPP members are criminals. Every party member should be worried about this,” he said, noting that Ghanaians who are not affiliated with the party are also closely observing developments and drawing conclusions.
Mr. Antwi further blamed internal inconsistencies within the NPP for the party’s loss of public confidence in recent elections. He cited the controversial domestic debt exchange programme, popularly referred to as the “haircut” issue, as an example of conflicting communication that confused and angered the public.
According to him, “the Chief Justice publicly assured Ghanaians that there would be no haircut, then the Finance Minister later announced otherwise, creating mistrust and contributing to the party’s electoral defeat.”
Although he expressed dissatisfaction with the arrest of the former Finance Minister, Mr. Antwi emphasized that his position is not about persecution but accountability.
“I am not happy about the arrest of the former Finance Minister. I only want him to be accountable,” he stressed.
