The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has inaugurated a new nine-member Ministerial Advisory Board, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to reshape Ghana’s sports sector and position it as a driver of national development.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Ministry’s Conference Room, was led by Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams, who said the board’s establishment reflects a renewed determination to modernise sports administration and strengthen the impact of sports on the economy and society.

In his remarks, Adams emphasised that the board will be central to policy direction, strategic planning, and ongoing structural reforms at the Ministry. He explained that the rapid expansion of Ghana’s sports ecosystem requires a governance model capable of anticipating challenges, maximising opportunities, and ensuring accountability across the sector.

He called on the advisory board to avoid superficial consultations and instead produce bold, actionable proposals that align with national priorities. According to the Minister, the government is committed to prudent resource management and expects the Ministry’s work to contribute directly to economic growth, job creation and social improvement.

As part of that broader agenda, Adams highlighted plans to use sports as a tool for public education on sanitation, community governance, and even the fight against illegal mining. He stressed that sports can serve as an avenue to drive behavioural change and strengthen civic responsibility across the country.

Sports Development Fund Nears Completion

Adams also revealed that cabinet has directed the Ministry to finalise work on the long-awaited Sports Development Fund, which is expected to be presented to Parliament soon. Once approved, the fund will secure long-term financing for major sports projects and provide steady support for the Ministry’s programmes and reform initiatives.

A Blend of Experience and Sporting Influence

The new board brings together a diverse group of professionals from public service, diplomacy, law, education, technology, security and elite sports. Members include:

Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams (MP) — Minister and Board Chair

The inclusion of football legend Abedi Ayew Pele attracted significant public attention, with observers describing it as a strong indication of the Ministry’s commitment to combining administrative expertise with real-world sporting insight.

Looking Ahead to the FIFA World Cup

Touching on Ghana’s preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Adams said the country’s focus extends far beyond simply qualifying and participating. He noted that careful planning is underway to ensure the tournament leaves lasting benefits for the nation’s sports infrastructure, youth development and community engagement.

Minister Pledges Support for Advisory Board

Adams commended the collective expertise of the board members and assured them that their recommendations will receive serious consideration. He also acknowledged the Ministry’s Chief Director and staff for their dedication to the reform process, saying teamwork will be central to transforming Ghana’s sports landscape.

The Minister concluded by reaffirming his commitment to working closely with the board to deliver a more efficient, innovative and people-centred sports sector.
