A couple at Kokrobite in the Ga South Municipality has been arrested after their 13-year-old daughter, identified as Celestine, died from what police believe to be a brutal assault inflicted by her father and stepmother.
According to preliminary police reports, the girl was allegedly attacked after she was accused of eating food meant for her younger brother. The father, Issah Mohammed, is said to have returned from work to accusations made by his partner, Yaa Grace, prompting what neighbours described as a violent outburst.
Sources close to the victim’s family revealed that Issah had previously divorced Celestine’s biological mother due to repeated episodes of abuse, a history relatives say should have served as a warning of the tragic events that unfolded.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that Issah allegedly used a cane, a shovel, and even a cutlass to beat the teenager, causing what investigators suspect were severe internal injuries. The couple then reportedly confined the weakened girl in a separate room without food or water. She died the next day.
Disturbed neighbours, who had grown increasingly suspicious after noticing the child’s absence and hearing distressing sounds, alerted the police. Officers swiftly moved in and arrested the couple.
A family member of the deceased’s mother, Justina Acquah, expressed deep anger and heartbreak, describing Issah as a “habitual abuser” who should have been held accountable long before the tragedy.
The Kokrobite District Police Command has launched a full investigation. Celestine’s body has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for autopsy as authorities work to build a case for prosecution.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the community, with residents calling for stronger protections for children and harsher penalties for domestic abuse.
