Sourcing from BBC News, The directors of Netflix’s record-breaking animated film KPop Demon Hunters have hinted at a possible sequel and expressed optimism about the movie’s chances at the Oscars.

Co-director Maggie Kang, speaking to the BBC, said she was “excited for the potential for more stories” involving the fictional K-pop group Huntr/x, though nothing official has been confirmed. Her co-director, Chris Appelhans, added that the team believes “there’s definitely more we can do with these characters.”

The film has become a global sensation, surpassing Squid Game as Netflix’s most-watched title with over 325 million views. It tells the story of a K-pop girl trio who juggle superstardom with saving the world from demonic forces, including rival boyband Saja Boys.

KPop Demon Hunters has broken multiple records, including becoming the first Netflix film to top the US box office with its sing-along version and producing a chart-topping soundtrack. Its anthem Golden spent eight weeks at number one, tying the record for the longest chart-topping song by an animated act.

With a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating, critics are tipping the film to win Best Animated Feature and possibly Best Original Song at next year’s Oscars. Netflix has already submitted Golden for Academy consideration, with other hit tracks like Your Idol and What It Sounds Like under review.

Kang and Appelhans credited fans for the film’s viral success, noting its dominance on TikTok and continued top rankings in 19 countries. The duo, however, dismissed rumours of a live-action adaptation, insisting the film’s humour and tone “only work in animation.”

Reflecting on the movie’s global impact, Kang said, “All the awards would be great, but just seeing people connect through this film feels like we’ve already won.”
