Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), through the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor and in partnership with the Gender Inclusion and Vulnerability Office of KNUST, has organized a two-day capacity-building workshop aimed at empowering women in leadership and enhancing work–life balance among female staff.

Held on 13th and 14th November 2025 at the SRC Conference Room, the workshop brought together female teaching and non-teaching staff for mentorship, skills development, and policy literacy training.

Opening the programme, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gabriel Dwomoh, urged women to intentionally prepare for leadership roles by pursuing continuous learning, building confidence, and strengthening their professional visibility. The Registrar, Mr. Ebenezer Boakye, described the initiative as a strategic investment in institutional excellence, noting that empowering women accelerates both university and national development.

Two distinguished academics from KNUST, Professor (Mrs.) Ibok Oduro and Professor (Mrs.) Mercy Badu, joined the sessions, reinforcing the collective commitment of tertiary institutions to gender inclusivity and career advancement.

A keynote address by Ing. Professor (Mrs.) Abena Agyeiwaa Obiri-Yeboah emphasized that the benefits of the Affirmative Action Bill would be limited without a pipeline of qualified women ready to occupy leadership positions. She encouraged participants to pursue higher qualifications, improve research output, and set clear career goals.

Discussions throughout the workshop explored work–life balance, motivation, identity, and the importance of professional networks. Professor Oduro urged participants to view leadership as a shared effort between men and women, while Professor Badu stressed the need to leverage gender advocacy platforms across universities.

Day Two featured a presentation by Deputy Registrar Dr. Jenkins on “Policy Literacy: Empowering Staff Through Policy,” urging staff to understand university regulations, promotion processes, and administrative structures to advance confidently. Professor Oduro also addressed the sensitive topic of navigating career growth while managing marital challenges, encouraging open communication and shared responsibilities at home.

A panel discussion provided a space for participants to share real-life experiences, challenges, and strategies for balancing leadership aspirations with personal commitments. The workshop concluded with a session led by Mrs. Ama Kyerewaa Boakye-Nti on action planning, offering practical guidance for aligning personal career goals with institutional expectations.

Participants described the programme as timely, transformative, and highly relevant to their professional growth. The workshop reaffirmed KsTU’s commitment to building a gender-responsive academic environment where women are equipped to lead, influence, and thrive. The University plans to sustain such initiatives to strengthen women’s participation in leadership across all levels.
