The Abuakwa Municipal Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for a 40-year-old carpenter known as Bro Kwame, who allegedly killed his co-tenant in Kyebi, the capital of the Abuakwa South Municipality in the Eastern Region.
The incident reportedly occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, sparking shock and outrage in the community.
Eyewitnesses say both men lived in the same compound with their families. Their children, who were close friends, often played together, a situation the suspect had reportedly objected to in the past.
According to co-tenant Janet Okyere, the confrontation began when Bro Kwame returned home and allegedly found the deceased’s son talking with his daughter. Angered by the boy’s response to a question, the suspect reportedly assaulted him. The boy then called his father to report the incident.
When the deceased arrived to confront Bro Kwame about the alleged assault, the situation quickly escalated. Janet recounted that the suspect allegedly slapped the man multiple times, retreated into his room, and returned wielding a machete, fatally slashing the victim’s throat before fleeing the scene.
The attack drew a crowd of angry residents. The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, who happened to be nearby, rushed to the scene to calm tensions and extend condolences to the bereaved family. He called on law enforcement at the regional, divisional, and municipal levels to intensify efforts against illicit drug use and related criminal activities.
The deceased, believed to be in his 50s, was a staff member of the Kyebi Presbyterian Education Unit. Authorities have indicated that his identity will be officially released after notifying his family.
Police have urged anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward immediately to aid in his arrest.
