The Member of Parliament for Bosompem Freho, Nana Kwame Asafo Ayeh, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of failing to take decisive action on challenges facing cocoa farmers.
Speaking on Oyerepa FM, the MP described the President’s approach as inadequate, arguing that the situation in the cocoa sector requires urgent and proactive intervention.
“John Mahama is being a lazy president,” he stated, insisting that the government must do more to address the concerns of farmers.
According to him, the ongoing difficulties in the cocoa sector risk pushing farmers into illegal mining activities.
“If the cocoa issues are not handled well, many farmers may be forced to give out their lands to galamsey operators. We already have information that some have started doing so,” he warned.
He therefore appealed to cocoa farmers to resist the temptation to lease or sell their lands for illegal mining, expressing hope that future governance would bring better conditions for them.
“We urge farmers not to sell their lands because a better government will come,” he added.
The MP also rejected the government’s attribution of the cocoa sector challenges to prevailing economic indicators, arguing that such conditions existed under the previous administration led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“All the indicators they claim are affecting cocoa prices were present before. The previous government worked under the same conditions,” he said.
He maintained that the current administration is using these factors as excuses rather than implementing practical solutions to support cocoa farmers.
