President John Dramani Mahama has announced that government will soon establish a 24-Hour Authority as part of preparations to fully operationalise the country’s proposed 24-hour economy policy.
The Authority, according to the President, will be responsible for registering businesses that opt into the initiative and outlining the incentives designed to support continuous production and service delivery.
President Mahama disclosed this on Thursday, January 8, during a working visit to the Ghana Publishing Company, where he praised management for proactively adjusting their operations ahead of the policy’s rollout. He commended the company for introducing a two-shift system, describing it as a practical demonstration of readiness for the 24-hour economy.
He explained that the committee set up to review the framework for the policy has completed its assignment and will soon submit its report to Parliament to enable the legal establishment of the Authority.
“I am happy to note that the committee has finished its work and it is expected to go to the floor of Parliament to set up the 24-Hour Authority,” President Mahama said, adding that the process would “open the way for implementation and the registration of all businesses that will be involved in the 24-hour economy.”
The President noted that beyond registration, the Authority will clearly define the incentive package available to participating businesses, stressing that organisations that take early steps to align with the policy stand to gain.
He pointed to the Ghana Publishing Company as one such early mover, indicating that it could benefit significantly once the initiative takes off.
President Mahama also welcomed efforts by the sector minister to engage the Ministers of Education and Finance to ensure that the Ghana Publishing Company plays a central role in the printing of government textbooks and learning materials.
“I am happy to know that the minister has lobbied the Minister of Education and the Minister of Finance so that when we start printing textbooks and learning materials, Ghana Publishing should get a big chunk of that contract,” he stated.
He explained that increased government patronage would strengthen the company’s revenue base and support its ongoing retooling and modernisation efforts.
The President encouraged the management of the Ghana Publishing Company to formally enrol in the 24-hour economy initiative once the Authority is established, expressing confidence that the policy would enhance productivity, revitalise state-owned enterprises, and contribute to broader economic transformation across the country.
