President John Dramani Mahama has urged state institutions to act decisively against public officials implicated in the misuse of government funds, stressing that accountability must go beyond committee hearings to actual prosecution.

Addressing participants at the 12th Annual Conference of Chairpersons of Governing Boards, Councils, and Chief Executives of Public Institutions in Ho, the President described the recurring financial irregularities exposed by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) as “deeply troubling.”

According to him, many public officers continue to mishandle state resources because existing sanctions are weak or delayed. “It is unacceptable that every year, we hear of the same careless financial infractions with little or no consequences,” he lamented. “Those responsible must be made to answer for their actions in court without delay.”

President Mahama announced plans to strengthen institutional checks by establishing a constitutional committee to ensure that the recommendations of the Auditor-General are fully implemented. He said this would help close loopholes that allow for repeated misuse of public funds.

He also emphasized the need for innovation in public service management through digital reforms. The introduction of the Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS), he noted, will enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability across government agencies.

Touching on his broader governance reforms, the President revealed that the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill has been laid before Parliament, saying the policy will create jobs, expand productivity, and modernize Ghana’s economic operations.

“The 24-hour economy is a commitment to create a system that works for everyone, day and night, while ensuring that public institutions remain transparent, responsive, and accountable,” he stated.
