President John Dramani Mahama has officially inaugurated a new Hajj Board, led by Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko, with a firm directive to deliver a more transparent, organised, and innovative management of Ghana’s pilgrimage operations.
During the swearing-in ceremony, President Mahama outlined a five-point mandate designed to transform the country’s Hajj administration. His priorities include early planning, strict accountability, improved safety and welfare systems, disciplined service delivery, and stronger communication with stakeholders.
The President advised the Board to start preparations for the next Hajj season without delay, noting that early release of registration timelines, processes, and fees will ease pressure on intending pilgrims and prevent uncertainty.
On accountability, he cautioned that every financial transaction must be conducted through authorised and verifiable channels, insisting that no unofficial charges will be tolerated.
“Pilgrims and their families deserve full clarity on how their money is handled. Trust is the foundation of good leadership,” President Mahama emphasised.
He further highlighted that the welfare of pilgrims, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, women, and persons with disabilities, must be prioritised at every stage of the journey. To this end, he called for closer collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, the Ministry of Transport, and Ghana’s embassy in Riyadh.
In a push towards modernisation, the President tasked the Board with creating a dedicated Hajj Mobile App to help pilgrims register, confirm their status, monitor payments, and access travel updates. Such a digital platform, he noted, would reduce fraud, enhance accessibility, and decongest registration centres.
President Mahama also encouraged the Board to maintain active engagement with the National Chief Imam, regional imams, travel agents, and Saudi authorities, stressing that smooth coordination is key to preventing logistical challenges.
With the new Board now in place, expectations are high for a more efficient, accountable, and pilgrim-centered Hajj experience for Ghanaian Muslims.
