President John Mahama is facing mounting pressure to take bold and uncompromising steps in the fight against illegal mining, as the Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called for the immediate prosecution of galamsey kingpins, including those explicitly named in official reports.

The demand was made during a high-level meeting between the President and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) at the Jubilee House on Friday, October 3, where the Bishops insisted that the galamsey crisis had moved beyond the stage of rhetoric and now required decisive state action.

According to the Bishops, the nation can no longer afford dialogue and half-measures while its environment and citizens are under siege. They pressed President Mahama to demonstrate courage by prosecuting powerful figures driving the menace, warning that failure to do so would deepen lawlessness and environmental destruction.

“We urge you to provide clearer benchmarks that will trigger a state of emergency. Visible prosecution of kingpins, including those named in official reports. Measurable performance indicators for local authorities and security services. Protection for communities and traditional authorities who resist galamsey, and accountability for those complicit,” they charged.

The Bishops cautioned that the stakes are higher than ever, with Ghana’s rivers, forests, and farmlands rapidly deteriorating under the weight of illegal mining. They stressed that the rule of law must be applied without fear or favour, insisting that no individual or group should be shielded by political connections or influence.

“Our people must see that no one is above the law. We are with you in this fight, and we urge you to act with courage and moral clarity,” they said.

Driving home their point, the Bishops reminded the President that history would judge him not by the number of speeches delivered but by the tangible protection secured for future generations.

“History will not measure your leadership by words alone, but by the protection you secured for generations yet unborn. Our house is on fire, let’s put it out,” they declared.

With the galamsey crisis continuing to devastate communities across the country, the Bishops’ call has amplified public demands for strong leadership and justice that targets not only small-scale operators but also the powerful kingpins whose actions have long gone unchecked.
