President John Dramani Mahama has assured that his administration will take a firm stand against any form of harassment, intimidation, or attacks on journalists in Ghana.
Addressing attendees at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards on Saturday, November 8, the President emphasized that his government is committed to upholding press freedom and protecting media professionals across the country.
“Let me be clear: no journalist will face intimidation, interference, or attacks under my leadership,” President Mahama declared.
He further revealed that steps are already underway to foster closer cooperation between the media and security agencies. “I have instructed the Minister for Government Communications and the Minister for National Security to establish a permanent forum for constructive dialogue. This will encourage mutual respect and help prevent future incidents,” he said.
Speaking under the theme, “Self-Guarding Ghana: The Role of the Media in Promoting Security and Peace,” President Mahama reaffirmed his goal of restoring the open media environment that characterized Ghana before 2017. “Our aim is to revive the democratic spirit where freedom of expression, institutional respect, and journalist safety were the norm,” he noted.
On the issue of violence against journalists and citizens during the 2020 and 2024 elections, the President provided a detailed update. “Investigations are complete. We have identified 21 suspects: four have been arrested and released on bail, five remain in custody, and warrants have been issued for the rest. The Attorney General is reviewing the reports to determine appropriate legal action and possible compensation for victims or their families,” he explained.
President Mahama stressed that justice would follow the law: “Victims deserve closure, and perpetrators will face the full consequences of their actions.”
While affirming his administration’s dedication to media freedom, the President reminded journalists to exercise their rights responsibly. “Freedom comes with responsibility. Journalism must uphold integrity, accuracy, and fairness. Rushing to break a story without verification can harm reputations and undermine public trust,” he added.
