
Makerere University has been ranked the number one university in East Africa, according to the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Sarah Ssali announced on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Vice Chancellor’s Boardroom, Prof. Ssali revealed that Makerere placed within the 801–1000 band globally, maintaining its strong academic reputation and regional dominance.
The ranking evaluated institutions across five key areas, Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry. Makerere achieved an overall score of 37.2, significantly higher than the regional average of 18.8.
The university particularly excelled in Research Quality (54.2%) and International Outlook (69.7%), reaffirming its reputation as a hub for innovation and global academic collaboration.
On the continental scale, Makerere ranked 8th among Sub-Saharan African universities, further solidifying its position as a leader in higher education and research.
Prof. Ssali emphasized that the university remains committed to academic excellence, research advancement, and social impact, saying, “Makerere continues to be a symbol of excellence in East Africa and beyond.”
