A disturbing case of child abuse in Mamobi, a suburb of Accra, has sparked outrage and renewed calls for justice after a guardian allegedly burned a seven-year-old girl’s private parts and thighs as punishment for bedwetting, only for the case to be later withdrawn under community pressure.

The suspect, 24-year-old Ayisha Zakaria, is reported to have heated a metal object, believed to be a spoon, before pressing it against the child’s skin, leaving her with severe burns. Residents say the assault occurred last week at the suspect’s home in the Ayawaso North Municipality.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident came to light when the victim’s teachers noticed her struggling to walk and showing visible signs of pain during school hours. Upon questioning, the frightened child revealed that her guardian had burned her “to stop her from wetting the bed.”

Alarmed by the revelation, school authorities and community members took steps to report the case to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service at Nima. The suspect was arrested shortly after.

However, in a shocking turn of events, the case was withdrawn on Monday, just days after the arrest.
