The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Akwasi Konadu, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of attempting to consolidate control over all arms of government to pave the way for a future third-term presidency for John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on Ezra TV, the MP claimed that recent political and institutional developments point to what he describes as an orchestrated effort by the NDC to dominate Ghana’s state machinery beyond constitutional limits.

“They are planning to make Ghana a one-party state for Mahama to go for a third term,” Konadu alleged. “They want him to continue so that the vision he has for the country will come to bear.”

Konadu argued that although the NDC already holds the Executive and has secured a parliamentary majority, the party is now attempting to extend its influence into the Judiciary. He referenced actions allegedly taken after the elections, including pressure on the Chief Justice.

“Right after their election victory, they focused on getting control over the Judiciary by sacking the Chief Justice and even ensuring she loses her profession as a judge,” he claimed. “To a large extent, that prevents her from practicing as a private lawyer in this country.”

He further alleged that the appointment of new judges reflects a broader strategy to align the Judiciary with the Executive. “They have added about seven judges to the Supreme Court and about forty-one to the High Court,” Konadu stated. “They are packing the Judiciary so as they also move in the direction of the Executive.”
