Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has taken issue with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over what he describes as an unreasonable and shocking bail condition imposed on him following his arrest on Wednesday, December 3.

Speaking on Joy FM on Thursday, Mr. Kpebu revealed that after writing his statement at the OSP, he was informed that he would only be granted bail if he produced proof of ownership of a landed property registered in his name.

“After I was arrested and I had written my statement, when it was time for them to grant me bail, they stated that I needed to provide a landed property in my name, and it looked like a joke to me,” he said.

Mr. Kpebu also expressed deep frustration over the treatment he claimed to have received while in the custody of the OSP, alleging that he had been verbally abused by a soldier without any intervention from officers present.

“After a soldier had verbally abused me and you haven’t protected me, someone who has come to help you to do your work, and now you arrest me, and you say I should produce a landed property,” he lamented.

He criticised what he believes is the OSP’s heavy-handed approach, insisting that such bail requirements were unnecessary, especially for someone who voluntarily made himself available to assist with ongoing investigations.

The OSP has not yet publicly responded to the allegations regarding the bail conditions or the reported verbal abuse.
