Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpedu, has expressed strong support for government’s decision to scrap regressive taxes, including the COVID-19 levy, describing the move as both timely and economically sensible.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points, Mr. Kpedu said government appears to have done its homework, noting that despite the removal of some taxes, revenue projections remain strong, with an estimated GH₵268.1 billion expected to be collected.

He argued that if the state manages its revenue prudently, Ghana can make significant progress. “It’s about using what you have well,” he stressed.

Mr. Kpedu also praised the 2025 budget’s projections for growth across key sectors such as ICT, finance, and agriculture, calling them “amazing” indicators of a forward-moving economy.

According to him, the decision to scrap the levy reflects confidence on the part of policymakers. “If they couldn’t have done it, they wouldn’t have announced it. Government will not score an own goal,” he said.

He noted that although Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia previously promised to remove the COVID-19 levy but was unable to achieve it, the current administration appears committed to easing the burden on citizens.

With many Ghanaians still struggling with high living costs, Mr. Kpedu believes the move is a necessary step. “The government must reduce the cost of living. They have to reduce the suffering of the people,” he added.
